OOC: family whut.

This post in [livejournal.com profile] ways_back_room brought up the subject of family.

Steph has Issues with family. She spent her short life dressing up as a hero purely so she could put her creepy, abusive, criminal dad in gaol, and when she wasn't doing that she was trying to convince her apathetic and useless mother to leave the drugs alone plz. The Bats, except for Cass, were always slightly standoffish; she liked them, but never felt wholly accepted by them, until she reached Milliways. Now... family. Hmm.

Dick is her brother, in all but blood, and probably her best friend as well, and also the person who's done the most to help her to heal. He was the first Bat to voluntarily tell her his secret identity and he's the only one in Milliways who knows all about her. Steph's a lot closer to him than I-the-mun am to any of my real brothers; Bat-relationships tend to be like that, though, because the rest of the world just doesn't really get Bats, and Bats do. The could-sleep-with-person-without-even-considering-sex rule applies here. Dick's open acceptance of her as family is one of the best things she's got.

There's Mel, who's settling into the role of big sister, and sort of filling the hole Cass left, except not quite. Steph had and still has an enormous crush on Cass, who's everything she ever wanted to be and took the time out to train Steph even when Steph was alive. It's different with Mel - Steph loves her, in a clingy sort of bat-way, but it's sisterly and almost protective rather than the desperate hero-worshippy love she has for Cass. Not that she's not in awe of what Mel does and is, but it's less intense, more steady. If Steph had ever really had a best female friend, or a real sister, she'd know what it is.

She wouldn't insult Barry by calling him a father-figure; 'father' doesn't exactly have good connotations for Steph. But he's family nonetheless. He helped her deal with dying and getting stuck here, he accepted her despite her mistakes, and he's one of the few people whose opinion she respects enough to obey him should he ever give an order. (Probably.)

She's not sure what Tim is to her any more, but she still loves him as if he were a brother. Cass, yep, Steph totally still has a mad crush on. Kon and Roy are friends, bordering on honourary brothers-in-law, but she wouldn't quite call them family. Everyone else she knows are classed as friends.

Jason, she's working on. He's a Robin, and therefore part of the Bat-family, but her love for him's definitely not brother-like or even remotely platonic, and he's dangerous and exotic and mysterious and she can't stop thinking about him. (I'd get meta and point out the parallels between the two, and the way they're so very similar in some ways and so totally opposite in others, but that's not terribly interesting to anyone who doesn't love the Robins as much as I do, so. *grin*)
