"Done what? I got it cut a couple of months ago." Where "cut" means "sharpened a combat knife and sawed through a hopeless tangle".

Steph shakes her head sadly.

"Okay. Sit here, and I'm gonna grab my scissors ... I think it's way past combing."

Makita looks confused, but obeys. "What are we doing, anyway?" She's still not clear on what a "girl's night" is.

"We are taking our minds off the general suckitude of the world by spending time making ourselves pretty," Steph explains, digging through her cupboards for Beauty Implements. She doesn't always have much time for them, but there are some nights when toenail separators and eyelash curlers are just essential.

"And I'm gonna trim your hair."

Those things look like really impractical weapons. What could they be for?

"What's wrong with my hair?" Makita rubs at the matted tangle.

Steph opens her mouth, and then closes it.

"It... could use some trimming, that's all. And some combing!"

And some product. This mat of hair is Goldie's second worst nightmare (right after having her own hair look like this). At least it's relatively clean and completely lice-free.

"Oh. Okay, but why?"

Oh, yeah. Product liek wo. (Steph will be very glad to discover the lice-free.)

She contemplates this question for a moment.

"...to surprise Proto. He'll totally think it's sexy. He can run his hands through it instead of tangling."

Makita considers this. What a novel idea.

She grins, "Oooooh." This is a Very Good Plan.

See, it just had to be phrased the right way.

"Sit still," Steph instructs, puffing detangler into her hand and reaching for 'Kita's head. "This may ... be a little uncomfortable..."

Here comes the comb!

Steph is a master diplomat!

Makita settles into complete stillness. It's a very Bat-like stillness. Followed by a gasping wince as the comb goes through.

This is going to take some work.

Steph's trying her hardest to be gentle! But every so often it gets all caught up and there's no option but to tug. And pull. And sometimes cut.

"So," she says, trying to distract 'Kita from the pain. "Seen any good movies lately? That's what hairdressers are supposed to ask, I think..."

Makita winces, but providing a pleasant surprise for Proto makes it worth it. Well, that and it makes Steph happy.

"Seen any good what?" Yes, it is sad, no movies for Makita.

"Huh. Well."

Steph lets go of her head for a moment, wipes her hands on her pants, and slides off the couch so she can crawl over to the DVD player.

"I think ... it might be an Ever After night, yeah?" She holds up the case, but doesn't wait for an answer before setting it up.

"Yeah," Makita answers anyway. Not that she knows what she's agreeing to, but so far tonight it's just been easiest to agree and let Steph do what she wants.

That's right. That way lies peace and prosperity.

Steph grins at her again, starting the DVD and crawling back to the couch. "Kay. Sit still again, and watch the movie, and I'll watch your hair, 'cept for the bits with the prince in."

Makita does as she's told.

"So, after you're done with my hair do I get to do yours?" This is... probably one of the most disasterific ideas of all time.

It does. But that's all part of the danger of girls' night, right? Someone's always going to end up looking like a clown.

"Sure," Steph says, tugging a particularly stubborn knot out.

She can't do that much damage ... right?

Looking like a clown is okay, looking like a well-worn rag doll? Not so much.

Makita grins, she can't wait to experiment with all these interesting things. For instance, what's that metal cylinder thing? Maybe it's for doing things with hair?

Oh, well. Steph really should've known what she was getting herself into, shouldn't she?

Everything is for doing things with hair!

"Okay," Steph says, yanking the last knot out. "Now, go get in the shower and wash it. Shampoo first, um, the green bottle, put some of that in your hand and then scruggle it all through your hair. Then wash it out, do it again, and then put some of the blue bottle in and just smooth it on, kay? And while you're doing that I'm gonna bake brownies."

And then she can dry it and put stuff in it and curl it and twirl it and possibly coat it in glitter!

Makita stands up and grins, "Right. 'Scruggle' the green bottle. Twice. Then blue bottle." She just stands, looking at the TV, "Just as soon as I see what happens to her."

Steph grins. "That, my young padawan, is what the pause button is for!"

She demonstrates.

"Go. And you have to wear bunny slippers, too. Not in the shower! When you come out. It's a rule! You can totally borrow Ed's, they're around somewhere."

Wow! The movie stopped right where it was! It must be some sort of magic!

"... okay?" And so Makita wanders into the bathroom to ~~poke through Steph's stuff~~ do as Steph has instructed.

Stuff exists to be poked through. (Anything incriminating is in a box under Steph's bed, anyway. A box with a big dent in the side where it got kicked. A box Steph's not going to be touching until it doesn't make her feel like a big empty hole. Oh, angst!) It's mostly just standard-issue Bathroom Stuff.

Steph hops up and sets about the brownies, clattering happily about the kitchen and keeping one ear out to make sure Makita isn't burning herself or getting stuck in the shower or anything.

Makita loves modern plumbing. Really, it's the only reason she even has her own room. It's not like she sleeps in the thing. Of course when your entire room is a glorified bathroom and you have it all to yourself, you don't tend to close doors, or know how to use a shower curtain. So steam pours out as the water runs and Steph's bathroom floor is coated in a thin layer of water as Makita hums and washes her hair as instructed.
